You may have heard that programming is hard, but that is not really so. Kids who are as young as 6 years old have been known to program. Writing Web Computer Programs

One of the simplest first steps you can take in learning how to write computer programs is learn how to create a web page. From there, you can start learning JavaScript, which is a programming language that runs on your browser. Clicking on that should show you the source code of this page. In that page, search for “Javascript”. You should then see some places where Javascript code has been written. That is one of the ways of using Javascript – by writing it as part of the Html page.

Computer Programs for Kids

Another interesting thing kids can do is program with LEGO. Lego comes out with a Lego Mindstorm Toys, which have sensors and other devices built into them. These sensors and devices can be controlled using any one of the Lego Mindstorm language, which includes C/C++, Java and Visual basic. Because of their complexity, the child may require adult supervision if he or she is very young. But in many cases, older children can start doing stuff with Lego Mindstorm toys by themselves.

More Advanced Programming

You cannot do much with Javascript and Legos. If you want the power of the internet in your hands, you can start learning a scripting language such as Ruby. Python is another good choice as first language. These languages are easy to use, and can be picked up on a beginner’s level in a couple of days. You should start out by simple programs such as printing “Hello World” and go on to writing slightly more complicated programs that can download a page from the internet for you, or programs that act as alarm clocks.
